about
A few years ago I was battling crippling insomnia, which brought me to some intensely dark places. Though it’s mostly abated, I still struggle to get to sleep sometimes. On one of those nights not long ago, I decided to channel the electric current coursing through me into a song. By daylight I’d written the bones of a danceable lullabye, whose form mirrored my own experience of falling asleep - the verses lull you into a state of melancholy near-sleep, then ramp up into an energetic burst of energy, the chorus, and this cycle repeats till the last gasp of the outro, like the sun coming over the horizon, when it’s finally safe to close your eyes.
lyrics
It’s a little late, I’m a little lost at sea
You’re a shadow in the corner hanging over me
How did we get here, how did I never see
That an opened door was opened for me
You’re a little lost, I’m a little isolated
Like there’s a party going on and I am not invited
But I come back to you, lay on your side
All through the flight
One by one, me and you, digging into the ground
Leave me space, hold my hand
When we are together you can
Fall asleep, baby-by
In thirteen years we never said goodbye
Early this morning I thought I saw you cry
Let’s while away the hours as the rivers dry
These days go by
Up all night, turning over everything that you said
There are words that I can’t get out of my goddamn head
That you treat me better than I treat you, and you let it
Hang in the air like you always do
One by one I count my blessings
It’s a struggle to remind myself what I’m not missing
And I kiss your forehead delicately
And thank god that he made you for me
Fall asleep, baby-by
In thirteen years we never said goodbye
Early this morning I thought I saw you cry
Let’s while away the hours as the rivers dry
These days go by
These days go by
Fall asleep, baby-by
In thirteen years we never said goodbye
Early this morning I thought I saw you cry
Let’s while away the hours as the rivers dry
These days go by
Days go by and they don’t come back
I was only 19 when I went for the attack
I was only aware of you peripherally
Till the day we met under the white pine tree
You had a Madvillain poster on the door
And a well-worn button-down shirt on the floor
I wasn’t sure how this would all end
But I love you even more than I did back then
I love you even more than I did back then
